Tips for good compost
There is certainly no need for us to tell you how environmentally friendly composting is. However, we would like to offer you some composting tips.
Compost needs air and earth. Therefore, never place a compost heap in a pit, a closed container, or on stone or concrete.
Compost needs moisture. Dryness or too much wetness cause harm to microorganisms and earthworms.
Compost needs warmth. The heap should always be well covered. This will prevent additional loss of moisture and nitrogen.
The use of wet and dry, coarse and fine material should be alternated.
Earthworms love onion skin, chive leftovers, coffee grounds and tea leaves.
Planting phlox and elder on compost encourages the propagation of earthworms.
A compost heap should preferably be protected from the wind, in the semi-shade, and easy to reach from the garden and house. Compost that is rearranged three times a year will be "ready" in 9 to 12 months. All that is then required is for it to be sifted and it can be used in the garden. Any coarse residue left after sifting belongs back on the compost - in this manner it will constantly improve!
What belongs in the compost?
- Tea leaves and coffee grounds, filter paper, egg shells, food leftovers, wild herbs, grass cuttings, large tree and shrub cuttings, leaves, flowers, etc.
- Only the skin of tropical fruit is unsuitable.
