The production process
Providing the ideal coating is a matter of course for us at BRISTA. That’s why we proceed step by step and in a systematic manner. The best basis and most important prerequisite for a perfect coating is a residue-free, absolutely clean and even surface. This is achieved using appropriate pre-treatment methods – and we offer two of these.
Chrome steel blasting or "sweeping"
We use the blasting process in particular for hot-dip galvanised parts. It roughens the surface and improves the adhesion of the powder coating without damaging the zinc coating.
Products with cavities, such as doors, are completely manually ground beforehand. These are not blasted as the blasting agent could accumulate in the cavities of the door frames. Grinding has the same effect as blasting.
The chemical pre-treatment
In the chemical pre-treatment plant, the products pass through four different zones:
Zone 1: The products are degreased.
Zones 2 and 3: The products are rinsed with water in two operations, and then again with demineralised water (DI water).
Zone 4: The product is subjected to a chrome-free passivation treatment. This agent increases the corrosion resistance of the surface and improves the adhesion capability for the coating.
After pre-treatment, all products undergo a retained water drying process, as only an absolutely dry material surface guarantees a flawless coating. In addition, this heat treatment (at approx. 200 °C) of galvanised products enables so-called "outgassing" of the freshly galvanised surface.
The powder coating
The actual powder coating process now takes place in the fully automated powder booth. The material to be coated is electrostatically positively charged. An electric field builds up and the negatively charged powder particles are attracted to the positive field of the material surface and evenly deposited. When the coating process has been completed, the products are transported through an oven in which the powder particles fuse at a temperature of approx. 180 °C to form a paint layer. After a suitable cooling-down phase, the goods can then be packaged.
The duplex system – the intelligent combination of hot-dip galvanising and powder coating
The duplex system is extremely popular in many sectors as it saves time, money and resources. Furthermore, hot-dip galvanising and powder coating complement each other particularly well when it comes to corrosion protection.
Combining these two processes also makes it possible to achieve a harmonious and flexible appearance. All RAL colours (industrial powder) can be applied. What’s more, the powder coating that follows the hot-dip galvanising process results in significantly longer corrosion protection as it shields the zinc coating against atmospheric and chemical influences.
